opensuse.org の Audio Troubleshooting (http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting#Alsa_web_site_suggestions_for_testing_sound) によれば
#cat /proc/asound/modules
# cat /proc/asound/cards
で自分のサウンドカードのモジュールや名前が判る。私の場合には、intel のカードだった
Inte-HDA sound problem (http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Intel-HDA_sound_problems)
によれば、intel と言ってもたくさんあるので
# head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec*によって具体的なCodec を調べる。私の場合には
Codec: Realtek ALC880
と返ってきた。
カーネルソースの Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt の ALC880 の
Codec の部分を参照すると、

となっており、自分のカードが上のどれなのかを調べて、model=<name>を /etc/modprobe.d/sound
ファイルのところに追加する。
例えば、
